Normal terminal ileum section shows normal lymphoid aggregates as Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) usually located spanning both mucosa and submucosa. No abnormal inflammatory cell infiltrates.

Ileum with Crohn’s disease shows moderate to marked fibrosis involving mostly submucosa and serosa and also some increased fibrosis in the muscularis propria and in the (partly ulcerated) mucosa.
